I just hated his US counterpart. It was awful.

US media getting on it was anticipated.Mike Baihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10068341672299379597noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8382651243381952237.post-20828516576583549932011-01-25T02:19:20.309+08:002011-01-25T02:19:20.309+08:00Thank you for this post. They just saw what they wanted to see and heard what they wanted to hear!
In fact, anyone who have watched the press-conference and knows some Mandarin, can tell that Hu Jintao never said he did not hear the question about the human rights. Hu said he did not hear that HE was asked the question.
Here is the real transcript from Mandarin, word by word: “Firstly, I have to explain to you, that I did not hear that the previous speaker (literally – “that mister”) asked ME a question about human rights to be answered by ME. I thought he was giving the question to Mr.President”.
Yes, the interpreters indeed sucked! Not only the Chinese one, but another guy (from the State Department, I guess) who was supposed to translate the first question of Ben Feller, also mumbled something like “E-e-e, President Hu, about previous question on human rights, HOW HAVE YOU ANSWERED?” I’ve been translating for summits of Chinese leaders (including Hu Jintao and his predecessor) with those from my own country (and that was not the US, so, please, pardon my English) for more than a decade, so I know what I’m talking about. The Chinese were insisting on the consecutive interpretation precisely in order to avoid any omissions or misinterpretation, and yet they happened.
You live in China, you know that Chinese often cannot understand even simple sentences in Mandarin if those are not phrased exactly in accordance with the pattern they used to.
But this is not an excuse for media to call someone a liar based on their own incompetence and ignorance, because by doing so they themselves become hypocrites and liars.D.Paletskiyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11599076557579421673noreply@blogger.com
